Philosophy of Education

A philosophy of education is a set of statements that identifies and clarifies the beliefs, values, and understandings of an individual with respect to education. A philosophy of education may influence what subjects are taught and how they are taught (Philosophy of Education, Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). The philosophy of education ties in with learning theory, one learning theory that came to mind that ties in with the philosophy of education is Dual Coding Theory. Dual Coding Theory is when people process information in two distinctly different ways; one, processing images and two, processing of language (Gunter, 2014, p.261-262). Like I stated above, the philosophy of education influences what subjects are taught and how they are taught. An example of how philosophy of education ties in with Dual Coding theory is taking the subject of Science. In Science you really need to understand the concepts and the vocabulary but wiring down definitions and remembering them sometimes doesn’t work for every student. Some students need another way to remember vocabulary and this is where not only verbal, but visuals come in to play. The additional visual concepts like Dual Coding theory is an effective way to teach and learn the concepts and vocabulary of Science.
